World Trade Day 2005
Highlights International Trade in KY
Some 38 international dignitaries representing 22 nations joined government and business leaders from throughout the Commonwealth to celebrate the 13th Annual World Trade Day on June 2nd at the Galt House Hotel in downtown Louisville, KY.
A special highlight of the event was the outstanding keynote address, given by the recently named Chairman of Louisville’s Humana, Inc., David Jones, Jr. Mr. Jones’ topic, “The World is Flat and the Pentagon Has a New Map” covered pertinent world issues and how they relate to us locally. Mr. Jones is also Chair and Managing Director of Chrysalis Ventures, a locally based corporation that identifies and nurtures promising early-stage companies poised for growth. Chrysalis has become a leading source of equity capital for growth companies in the Southeast and Midwest.
Prior to Chrysalis, Mr. Jones’ law practice included both domestic and international work, the latter with the U.S. Department of State Legal Adviser's office in Washington. Before law school, he worked as a commercial banker for Bank of Boston in Hong Kong, New York, and Boston. Mr. Jones left the bank to manage the import division of a regional hardware wholesaler.
In addition to our prestigious keynote speaker, the Kentucky World Trade Center was pleased to host the representative from the International Trade Administration, U.S. Department of Commerce: Mr. Al Frink. Mr. Frink is the first Assistant Secretary for Manufacturing and Services, serving as chief advocate for the U.S. manufacturing sector within the federal government and brings 30 years of private-sector experience to his new position. As a small business executive, Mr. Frink built an internationally recognized carpet manufacturing company, Fabrica International, a carpet manufacturer from Orange County, CA.
Dignitary Guests
A delegation of dignitaries from foreign Embassies, Consulates and Trade Commissions throughout the United States traveled to Kentucky to promote trade and investment opportunities with their countries. A ‘Tour the World’ trade fair allowed international businesses in Kentucky to discuss trade issues specific to their company with each of the foreign officials.
Among the countries represented at World Trade Day 2005 were Australia, Belarus, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Qatar, Slovak Republic, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam and the United Kingdom.
