President Bush issued Dec. 29 a proclamation implementing the free trade agreement between the U.S. and Oman. Effective Jan. 1, this proclamation modifies the Harmonized Tariff Schedule to reflect the duty benefits and rules of origin under the FTA, remove Oman as a beneficiary country under the Generalized System of Preferences and make technical and conforming changes in the general notes.
A press release from the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative states that 100 percent of two-way trade in consumer and industrial products is now duty-free, expanding opportunities for exports of machinery, automobiles, optic and medical instruments, electrical machinery, and agricultural products such as vegetable oils, sugars, sweeteners and beverage bases. In addition, the USTR states, Oman will provide substantial market access across its entire services regime.
