DOT Says Surface Trade with Canada and Mexico Rose Faster in October

The Department of Transportation reports that the recent increase in U.S. surface transportation trade in goods with NAFTA partners Canada and Mexico accelerated in October, rising 7.2% from September. The $61.4 billion total represented a 15.5% drop from October 2008. Surface transportation consists largely of freight movements by truck, rail and pipeline and accounts for about 88% of U.S. trade by value with Canada and Mexico.
Surface trade between the U.S. and Canada totaled $36.3 billion in October, up $1.5 billion from September but down 19.0% from October 2008. Exports by truck fell 9.5% by value from the previous year while imports by truck declined 15.8%. U.S.-Mexico surface transportation trade totaled $25.1 billion, up $2.6 billion from the previous month but down 10.0% from a year before. Exports by truck dropped 13.5% by value while imports by truck fell 4.2%.
According to the DOT, the value of U.S. surface transportation trade with Canada and Mexico in October was up 7.9% compared to October 2004 and 34.7 % from October 1999, including a 38.1% increase for exports and a 31.9% rise for imports.
