The Lexington-Bluegrass Association of Realtors (LBAR), in partnership with the Kentucky World Trade Center (KWTC), recently hosted a cross-cultural training on the cultures of China and Japan. The speakers were Matt Krebs, Executive Director of the Japan/America Society of Kentucky, and Ying Juan Rogers, Vice President of the KWTC. Participants learned about Japanese and Chinese business and cultural practices, as well as what members of those cultures value when looking for a new home.
The training was part of a series on various international cultures, presented quarterly at LBAR.

Looking ahead to manufacturing's future
A few years ago I co-authored a book taking a look at the next 200 years of human history. Despite the dangers of forecasting, it is useful from time to time to look ahead, if only 10 or 20 years. Manufacturing is after all a business that requires making large bets on future trends.
In short, I think demographic, economic and political trends will continue in coming decades to provide a favorable outlook for U.S.-based manufacturing. The growth of the world population sets the stage for continued economic expansion. The United Nations predicts that world population will grow by 28% by 2030 and a total of 40% by 2050, when it reaches nearly 9.2 billion.. More...
Export ABC's: Documentation control
The March and April columns covered document-driven payment terms. Transportation documents are commonly used to trigger payments as they are evidence of shipment. Depending on the transportation mode, they are typically prepared by forwarders or carriers, but in all cases are executed by carriers.
“Forwarders and carriers” presupposes a situation that doesn't always exist. When I started exporting, forwarders were companies that represented shippers, making transportation arrangements on their behalf with carriers. They looked after shipper interests -- even versus carriers when necessary. Today, forwarders and carriers are often divisions of the same organization. More...
Pakistan raises import tariffs on luxury items
Pakistan’s Daily Times newspaper reported last week that the Federal Board of Revenue has imposed regulatory duties of five to 50 percent on imports of nearly 400 “non-essential and luxury items.” Goods affected include “luxury vehicles with an engine capacity of 1800cc and above, fresh fruit and vegetables, consumer electronics, cosmetics, non-industrial machines and non-prohibited arms and ammunition,” the article said. Jump in exports cuts U.S. trade gap
The US trade deficit narrowed unexpectedly in June by 4.1 per cent to $56.8bn (€38.1bn, £29.9bn), as exports grew more than twice as fast as imports in spite of surging oil prices.
Economists said the data would lead to an upward revision of US economic growth in the second quarter, from the 1.9 per cent annualised rate reported last month. More...
Special entry requirements for softwood lumber
U.S. Customs and Border Protection has issued an interim rule setting forth the procedural and documentation requirements necessary to implement the entry requirements specified in the Softwood Lumber Act of 2008. This law requires the establishment of an importer declaration program for certain softwood lumber and softwood lumber products imported from any country. It also prescribes special entry requirements whereby importers must submit with the entry summary (a) the export price and estimated export charge (if any) for each line of covered products and (b) the importer declaration. There are also new recordkeeping requirements applicable to certain imports of softwood lumber home packages and kits. More...
Legislative update: Product safety moves, trade preferences await
Congress adjourned for its summer recess Aug. 1, but not before acting on a long-awaited product safety bill and setting the stage for a trade preference bill to possibly move later this year. With the timeframe for legislative action down to a matter of weeks (lawmakers return Sept. 8 and adjourn Sept. 26, and it is unclear whether they will hold a “lame duck” session following the November elections), following is an update on the more significant trade-related bills still pending in Congress.
