China offers guidance on corporate social responsibility

The Sina news service reports that on Sept. 9 China’s Ministry of Commerce published a draft corporate social responsibility guide for foreign-invested companies. According to the article, the guide provides that these companies should (a) ensure that their business operations are in compliance with applicable laws, regulations and business ethics, (b) balance competing interests by generating value for shareholders, paying taxes, improving labor and living conditions for workers and contributing to environmental protection in their communities, and (c) be “willing to make [a] contribution to [the] social public good.”
