Business Sinews of US-Saudi Relations

Since the discovery of oil by American firms in the 1930's, extensive trade relations have linked the United States and Saudi Arabia. American technology developed the oil production and export facilities. During the oil boom of the 1970's, American construction companies built the Kingdom's modern infrastructure of power generation, airports, hospitals, universities and military facilities, and that work continues today in the expanding petro-chemical complexes. The educational experience of tens of thousands of Saudis in the US has made familiarity with American technology, quality standards and brand reputations the basis of a vast market for American exporters. Increases in oil revenue in recent years has led the Kingdom into a second round of infrastructure development of water desalination, power generation, railroad construction and mining ventures, all markets for American construction and equipment supply firms. Details of these opportunities and the particular techniques for winning business in Saudi Arabia will be the principle focus of this discussion.

Speaker: Les Janka currently holds the positions of President of the Council on American-Saudi Dialogue and Vice President of the National Council on US-Arab Relations. Mr. Janka has more than 25 years experience as a senior international affairs expert and has held several key positions in the US government, including Special Assistant to President Ronald Reagan and Deputy Press Secretary for Foreign Affairs. In addition, Mr. Janka also served as Special Assistant to Dr. Henry Kissinger on the National Security Council (NSC) at the White House, and also as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Near Eastern, African and South Asian Affairs.

Economics in Asia and other areas of the globe are growing and expanding yearly, creating an excellent environment for foreign investment. Never before have the doors been this open and opportunities this available for smaller to mi-seized companies. What was once territory for only large multinational companies is now ripe for all who are interested in a global economy. Mr. David shares the real-life experience of developing and increasing a business on a global scale.

Author Irl Davis shares his expertise on how to coordinate the proper paperwork, identify cultural differences, break down language barriers, and avoid the political land mines that is inherent in doing business overseas.
