Ukraine to Join WTO

April 17, 2008

The World Trade Organization announced that Ukraine will become a member of the trade body on May 16.
Ukraine, a former Soviet republic, along with Russia and Iran, has been one of the last of the world’s large countries to remain outside the WTO. Ukraine's accession means it will have a say in the ongoing talks regarding Russia joining the group. Russia and Ukraine have frequently been embroiled in disputes over their energy trade. In January, Ukraine's president, Viktor Yushchenko, said he intended to use the WTO membership to strengthen Kiev's position in its economic disputes with Moscow.
