Peru-Canada Trade Accord Near

January 25, 2008

Peru and Canada are expected to sign a bilateral free-trade agreement this weekend, according to officials from the two countries. Peru signed a free-trade deal with the United States in December. Later this year, Peru also expects to complete similar pacts with China, Singapore and Mexico. Peru's exports to Canada are largely minerals. Peru is the world's largest producer of silver and the third-largest producer of copper and zinc. On the other hand, Peru imports much of the wheat it consumes and Canada is a leading exporter of the grain to Peru. Peru’s free-trade policy represents a turnabout for its president Alan Garcia, formerly the country’s leftist president.
