Influential CEO from United Arab Emirates Visits Kentucky

On August 10, the KWTC co-sponsored a dinner program to welcome special guest and keynote speaker Mrs. Raja Easa Al Gurg from the United Arab Emirates.

Mrs. Al Gurg was appointed by her father, the UAE Ambassador to England, to be CEO of his billion dollar Al Gurg Group, which is comprised of 22 divisions that include Grundig, Stanton, United Colors of Benetton, Dulux and Unilever. Mrs. Al Gurg is also a member of the board of directors of the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, a very prestigious and powerful position since all businesses in Dubai are required to be members of the chamber, and must have their approval to operate in Dubai.

Mrs. Al Gurg gave a compelling and very personal presentation about her experience as a Muslim businesswoman, wife and mother. She dispelled the myth that veiled Muslim women in the UAE are uneducated housewives controlled by their husbands. To the contrary, she stated that women are highly educated and successful, and are given support by their husbands to achieve professional goals. She attributes much of her success to working on the front lines of each business she overseas for 8 years before taking the position as CEO.

Ms. Al Gurg also recounted her formula for success – hard work, humility, promptness, taking time to make important decisions, setting family as a priority, and maintaining a very close relationship with her children. One of her favorite rituals is laying on the bed surrounded by all of her 5 children each evening, and asking each one to tell the others about their day.

Because Ms. Al-Gurg is an important member of the business community in Dubai, she is a key contact for U.S. companies looking for trade and investment opportunities in the United Arab Emirates. She may be contacted through Export Management Corporation in Louisville at info@emccompanies.com.

The event was organized by the Ambassador Program, a non-profit organization promoting international partnership and collaboration. For more information, please visit www.ambassadorprogram.org.
